In line with Government’s vision to ensure that the country has the right infrastructure to address the country’s development requirement, La Gogue dam, (the country’s largest dam), has been raised by 6metres. The 6-metre raise increased La Gogue dam storage capacity by 60% or by 600,000 m3 (from 1 million m3 to 1.6 million m3). Rochon dam is the smallest of the two dams found in Seychelles, with a total storage capacity of 50,000 m3.
During the course of the La Gogue dam raising project, PUC did its utmost to ensure a reliable supply of water to the population by supplementing fresh water sources with desalinated water and had to intermittently resort to imposing water restrictions during prolonged dry seasons to manage the limited water reserves in a sustainable manner.
La Gogue dam was commissioned in December 2022 and was inaugurated on 29th June 2023 as part of activities to commemorate National Day. The President of the Republic of Seychelles, Mr. Wavel Ramkalawan together with the Chief Executive Officer of PUC, Mr. Joel Valmont, unveiled of the inauguration plaque in the presence of high-ranking government officials during a short ceremony at the dam.
Non-revenue water (NRW) is water that has been collected and treated but is lost or unaccounted for before or when it reaches the customers. In Seychelles, the losses are mainly attributed to leaks, aging and non-performing pipelines, faulty meters, illegal water abstraction and meter tempering. The NRW programme includes, inter alia, attending to leakages, pressure management in the network, detection of illegal water abstraction, and replacement of non-performing meters. The programme started in the North of Mahe and was then extended to the South. It then shifted to Praslin. Currently, work is being undertaken on La Digue, where further reductions in NRW levels are expected. NRW efforts have resulted in a more reliable and efficient network, thus increasing availability of treated water for customers as well as bringing in increased revenues to PUC.
Desalination Plants
PUC also operates six desalination plants, four of which are located on Mahé, one on Praslin and another one on La Digue, with the aim of supplementing the potable water supply and to mitigate the risk of water restrictions to its customers. The plants have a total production capacity of 28,550m³. Desalination Plants offer a reliable alternative source of potable water in times of prolonged dry weather conditions or when river water collected at PUC barrages becomes so heavily silted during torrential rainfall, that it cannot be treated to an acceptable standard. Water storage tanks
PUC always encourages members of the public to use water responsibly, and to invest in a rainwater harvesting or potable water storage system, or both, as an additional source of water supply for their households. These tanks are especially useful during prolonged dry weather conditions when water restrictions are imposed and/ during supply interruptions due to breakdowns or maintenance on the water network. How do I apply for a water connection?
To apply for any utility connection, customers must visit any customer service branch (Maison de Malavois, Providence, Anse Royale, Creole Spirit Building) with the following documents:
- A location plan
- Copy of applicant’s identity card
- Planning approval if building/house has not been built yet
Upon arrival at our customer service branch, you will be required to fill in an application form, and then PUC will follow through with processing your utility request.
What deposit amounts must I pay for a water connection?
The deposit amounts are SCR100 for domestic and SCR500 for commercial accounts respectively.
