Grid-tied photovoltaic systems
The use of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems is gaining increasing popularity in Seychelles. Small to medium sized consumers are installing grid-tied photovoltaic systems on their roofs. The tariff arrangement adopted is one set on net tariff where the energy produced by a customer offsets the energy consumed, leading to price reduction in utility bill. It is mandatory for customers to have their premises and the grid network surveyed prior to PV installations.Should you wish to install PV panels at your home or business, click here to learn more about photovoltaics and the application process via PUC to URC (Utilities Regulatory Commission).
Ile de Romainville 5MWp Solar Farm
Built on the southern half of Ile de Romainville, the Solar Farm comprises of almost 15,000 PV panels installed over an area of about 50,000 m2. It has the capacity to produce 7GWh of electricity yearly, which can meet the electricity needs of approximately 2,000 homes. The Solar Farm has doubled the amount of energy produced from renewable energy in Seychelles, reduced the emission of greenhouse gases related to electricity produced from fossil fuel, and lowered the annual fuel consumption related to electricity production.
The solar farm project complements the 6MWp Port Victoria Wind Farm, which was a donation from the UAE Government. With the amount of energy produced from renewable energy doubled after the Solar Farm’s commissioning, the country has achieved its goal to reach its 5% target, originally set for 2020. The Solar Farm has been funded at a cost of USD 10.2m through a concessional loan from IRENA-ADFD amounting to approximately USD 8.5m, with the balance of funds (USD 1.7m) coming from PUC’s own equity.
The 5MWp Solar Farm was inaugurated on 12th December 2022 by the Vice President of the Republic of Seychelles, H.E. Ahmed Afif and the Deputy Director General of Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, H.E Khalifa Abdulla Al Qubaisi.
PUC is supporting the Government in its vision to have a sustainable energy future for the Seychelles and PUC shall be increasing the current amount of renewable energy contribution to achieve the national target of 15% by 2030 with the assistance of financiers who share in the vision of empowering developing countries to achieve sustainable economic growth.
